Abstract

This paper explains indexing notation in mathematics and its implementation in
the modeling language LPL. Indexing is one of the most fundamental concept in
mathematical notation. It is extremely powerful and allows the modeler to concisely
formulate large and complex mathematical model. A certain number of exercises are
given and implemented in LPL, so the reader can test the concepts.

In my experience, many students fail to create – or even read – mathematical
models, because they didn’t learn correctly how to use indexing notation. It is not
particularly difficult and it can be learnt easily. Unfortunately, in most mathematical
modeling textbook this is badly neglected. Hopefully, this paper can remedy deficit.
